Q What exactly are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are a collection of dilated blood vessels that are located around the anus and extend inside for approximately 2 inches.

Q What causes Hemorrhoids?

The exact cause of hemorrhoids is unknown; however, the upright posture of humans alone forces a great deal of pressure on the rectal veins, which sometimes causes them to bulge. Other contributing factors include:

Chronic constipation or diarrhea
Straining during bowel movements
Faulty bowel function due to overuse of laxatives or enemas
Spending long periods of time (e.g., reading) on the toilet
Whatever the cause, the tissues supporting the vessels stretch. As a result, the vessels dilate; and their walls become thin and bleed. If the stretching and pressure continue, the weakened vessels protrude

Q What are the types of hemorrhoids?

There are two types of hemorrhoids — internal and external. Internal hemorrhoids usually are not painful, but may bleed. Sometimes, an internal hemorrhoid may stretch until it bulges outside the anus. This is called a “prolapsed hemorrhoid”. A prolapsed hemorrhoid can go back inside the rectum on its own over time, or it can be gently pushed back inside. If the prolapsed hemorrhoid cannot be pushed back inside, consultation with a physician about surgical treatment options is necessary. External hemorrhoids involve the veins around the anus. They can be itchy or painful and can sometimes crack and bleed. If a blood clot forms, one may feel a tender lump on the edge of the anus, and see bright red blood on toilet paper or in the toilet after a bowel movement.

Q What are the symptoms of hemorrhoids?

Symptoms of hemorrhoids, both external and internal, include:

Aching after a bowel movement
Anal or rectal itching
Bright red blood on toilet tissue or in toilet bowl
Appearance of anal tissue pads or sensitive lumps
We urge you to consult the NYC hemorrhoids specialist, Dr. Shawn Khodadadian if you experience any of these hemorrhoid symptoms.

There are several possible causes for rectal bleeding and a complete evaluation and early diagnosis by your doctor is very important. Rectal bleeding, whether it is minor or not, can be a symptom of any type of colorectal or anal cancer, a type of cancer that can be cured if detected early. Rectal bleeding can also be caused by hemorrhoids or many other causes. If you are having blood from your anus or if the blood appears in conjunction with other symptoms, you should consult a doctor or a gastroenterologist like Dr. Khodadadian. It may be a sign of a serious condition.

Q Who gets hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids can affect both women and men of all ages, increasing in occurrence after age 30. As many as 50% of all Americans over age 50 will have experienced hemorrhoids. At Manhattan Gastroenterology in NYC, the doctor successfully treats patients who have hemorrhoids of all ages, ethnicities, and genders daily.

Q What is the most effective way to treat hemorrhoids?

Dr. Khodadadian, a best in class Upper East Side NYC gastroenterologist has completed special training in applying IRC and has treated multitudes of patients successfully with this procedure. Dr. Khodadadian also perform rubber band ligation for hemorrhoid treatment and refers for surgery as needed.

Q What exactly is IRC hemorrhoids treatment?

Infrared coagulation hemorrhoids treatment, or IRC, is a minimally invasive, is a non-surgical medical procedure used to treat hemorrhoids. While there are many techniques for eliminating problem hemorrhoids, IRC has been shown to be effective and fast acting. Infrared Coagulation (IRC) has quickly become a widely used office treatment for hemorrhoids and is well-tolerated by patients. Infrared coagulation is conducted on an outpatient basis in the doctor’s NYC office. Mild sedation can be used to alleviate any discomfort during the procedure.

Q Is the NYC hemorrhoids specialist, Dr. Shawn Khodadadian able to remove external hemorrhoids?

Many symptoms patients experience are from engorged internal hemorrhoids or anal fissures (which patients usually refer to as “external hemorrhoids”). When the internal hemorrhoids are banded and shrink, the external hemorrhoids usually do as well. Many times this alone will relieve the symptoms of pain and bleeding. After hemorrhoid banding is completed, a skin tag may remain. These tags often do not cause any symptoms. An acute blood clot of an external hemorrhoid can be very painful and may require drainage.

Q What is the difference between hemorrhoids and an anal fissure?

Many of the symptoms that patients experience such as pain, itching and bleeding can be symptoms of both hemorrhoids or anal fissures. Because of this, patients tend to self diagnose themselves incorrectly. It is important to always consult your gastroenterologist for a proper diagnosis. Because bleeding can also be a symptom of colorectal cancer, it is important to rule out other problems as well.

Q What things can I do to prevent flare-ups of my hemorrhoids?

Eating properly is the first step. Eating more fiber is very important. You can supplement your fiber intake Drinking more fluids can also be helpful.

D. Khodadadian is a great doctor! Really gets the job done!

5/ 5

Front desk was wonderful and efficient. Dr. Khodadadian was very friendly, he slowly listened to my case history and asked questions to better understand my situation. He did not hurry me at all and was calm, patient and understanding. At the end of the visit, he clearly explained his goals and recommendations, and also explained the reasons why he did not choose alternatives based on my case. Great doctor, clean office, great staff.
