Q What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a way of artificially replacing a tooth, including the tooth root.

It consists of a post that is inserted into the jawbone during a small surgical procedure and is used to support a dental prosthesis that may be a crown, bridge or denture.

The implant interacts with the jawbone during a process called osseointegration, forming a strong bond between the implant post and the jawbone, creating the kind of strength and stability only previously provided by natural teeth.

Q Titanium vs Zirconia Dental Implants

Titanium

Metal Based
Biocompatible
Coated to prevent corrosion
Post coated with hydroxyapatite
Zirconium

Non metal based
Helps to discourage the buildup of plaque and tartar around the implant
Lower the risk of gum disease
Cosmetically pleasing result due to the natural white tooth color of this material

Q How Does a Dental Implant Work?

The easiest way to think of a dental implant is to imagine it being an artificial tooth root as its design closely imitates the structure of a natural tooth. Whereas your natural teeth are best described as having two separate parts which are the tooth root and the crown of the tooth which is seen above the gums.

Q What Is Osseointegration?

During your dental implants treatment, you are likely to hear the word osseointegration. This word derives from ‘osteon,’ the Greek word for bone and the Latin word for ‘to make whole’ which is integrate.

Osseointegration refers to the process that will take place between the living bone and the surface of your dental implant.

Over a period of several months, new bone cells will begin to grow on the implant post and around it. This helps to hold the implant post securely in place so it becomes an integral part of the jawbone, ensuring it will be strong enough to support a new tooth.

Q Components of Dental Implants

The Implant Post
The implant post is inserted directly into the jawbone during a small surgical procedure. The post is shaped to closely replicate the shape of a natural tooth root and may be tapered towards its end.

Dental implant posts come in a variety of shapes and sizes, according to the implant system chosen by Dr. Rahmani and the size of the tooth being replaced. The actual post is hollow to allow the abutment to be screwed into the post.

The Abutment
The abutment screws into the implant post and is attached in preparation for the implant tooth. It is used to support the implant tooth and the design depends on the final restoration.

Abutments used to support single crowns or bridges look almost like little stubby teeth, protruding just above the gum line. Abutments used to support dentures are quite different as the denture clips onto the abutment, or the abutments may have a special bar attached that will support new teeth or denture in a day.

The Implant Restoration
An implant restoration can be a crown, bridge or an implant supported denture. Regardless of the restoration used, it will completely cover up the dental implant underneath so only your new tooth will be visible.

Although single tooth implants have three separate parts, some implants are fabricated as a single structure, consisting of the implant post and the abutment.

Q Immediate Load Dental Implants

During this process new bone cells grow on and around the implant posts that are specially treated to encourage this growth. It takes between three and six months for the implants to be considered stable enough to support a new crown or bridge unless its possible to immediately load a dental implant.
